Millennials know that nobody is perfect and, in fact, are embracing their own and their mini me's imperfections. We know that children throw tantrums because they simply do not know how to handle their big feelings yet, and we have to teach them. We also understand that just because we are in charge of teaching them how to handle their big emotions, we too are trying to learn how to handle our own big adult feelings, and sometimes that makes parenting even messier than it already is.
That can be extremely frustrating. However, in true millennial fashion, we handle this parenting frustration the best way we know how: With humor!
We know children mimic their adults, so we can't just laugh at them doing something wrong, or else they will think it is okay. But holy moly, that can be difficult sometimes. As millennials, we grew up laughing when the times got tough. So when our child does something inappropriate, like saying “your mom” to their teacher, we have to teach them that it is not okay, but… BAHAHAHAHAHA! YOUR MOM! Your 7-year-old just said, “your mom” to their teacher; that is friggin' hilarious.
So, what do we do when our children are top-tier comedians, but we can't let them know that? Well, many parents have turned to hiding their heads in the fridge or cupboard while disciplining their child. Others have to take a minute and walk into a completely different room so they don't laugh in their kid's face. Some moms or dads have to simply pass the disciplining duty sometimes because they truly just cannot take it seriously, even though they know it should be.

“I coach 3rd&4th grade cheer. One of my girls is a wild child who sounds like she smokes a pack of menthols a day. Always has a pickle. She flipped off the scoreboard at the last football game, and when another girl tattled, she hit her chest twice, threw her arms out like she was bucking up, ready to fight, and immediately did a split, never breaking eye contact with the tattler. She’s 8. She’s also my favorite. Secretly, of course.”

As you can see, parenting is different for every family. You are not the only one who is just winging it as you go along. In fact, I would argue that it is the best technique for parenting: Wing it, mama! Just roll with the punches, papa! You truly cannot predict how your kids are going to grow up, and you most definitely can't force it, so just do your best, with all the love you can give, and stay strong!
You're all raising great kids out there. (And we're so excited for the next generation's world of comedy!)
